System Operator Training

MISO works with members to develop and implement world-class simulation drills and training exercises. Each year, hundreds of operators participate in MISO-led restoration and reliability drills that are designed to challenge and improve operators’ skills and knowledge. The training also enhances the critical communication skills needed to operate the bulk electric system reliably.

MISO's technical development program is designed to increase system operators’ confidence and preparedness in handling emergencies and other job-specific scenarios.

Annual Training

This drill is for South Region member operators only.

Each year, MISO and South Region member operators undergo hurricane preparedness training. During the training, participants review the forecast for the upcoming hurricane season and engage in conversation around roles and responsibilities before, during, and after a hurricane impacts MISO's South Region. Use of the MISO training simulator fosters teamwork and collaboration through simulated scenarios.

2026 Drill Dates: April 7 and May 5.

Registration will be available in the MISO Learning Center this winter.

MISO DTS Refresher Session (for Simulator Operators and Drill Coordinators)

This 3-hour facilitated refresher session provides a 2-hour training, 1-hour Q & A and MISO Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS)-related resources for MISO Members attending the Hurricane Drill. While attending this session is optional, please note that DTS training will not be provided in the same capacity during the scheduled Drill.

Attendance is recommended for:

  • First-time Hurricane Drill member-attendees/MISO DTS users
  • Those who have found navigating the MISO DTS challenging in past MISO Drills
  • Those seeking additional MISO DTS training

2026 MISO DTS Refresher Session Date:

Tuesday, March 10 from 9:00am-12:00pm ET

Registration will be avalable in the MISO Learning Center this winter.

Each year, MISO provides an opportunity for stakeholders and operators to learn collaboratively about communication procedures during a reportable event.  The drill will also include conversation around MISO and member roles and responsibilities for different stages of a Capacity Emergency during periods of extreme weather and other abnormal circumstances.

2026 Drill Dates: April 8, April 22, April 29, May 6

Registration will be available in the MISO Learning Center this winter.

Twice a year in the fall, in coordination with member companies, MISO provides a two-day restoration drill using simulation technology.  This drill allows participants to assess system conditions at various stages of restoration. Members and MISO operators will have opportunities to leverage blackstart resources, assess interconnections using the interconnection checklist, and implement appropriate restoration and communication plans based on the design of the drill.

2026 Drill Dates: September 29-30 and October 13-14.

Registration will be available in the MISO Learning Center this summer.

MISO PSR Drill Design Days & DTS Refresher Sessions (for Simulator Operators and Drill Coordinators):

About Build Day Sessions

We’re excited to announce the return of design days in MISO Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) prior to the Power System Restoration Drill. Participating design-day-members will have the opportunity to build the islands they will be using for day two of the drill, contributing to the successful completion of all learning outcomes, simulation experience, and overall value of the drill. Each Design Day will begin with a brief DTS refresher. This year, we will continue to follow this format and offer three (3) design days and one (1) DTS refresher session.

About the MISO DTS Refresher Session

This 3-hour facilitated refresher session provides a 2-hour training, 1-hour Q & A and DTS-related resources for MISO Members attending the PSR Drill. While attending this session is optional, please note that DTS training will not be provided in the same capacity during the scheduled Drill.

Attendance is recommended for:

  • First-time PSR Drill member-attendees/MISO DTS users
  • Those who have found navigating the platform challenging in past MISO Drills
  • Those seeking additional MISO DTS training

MISO PSR Drill Design Days & DTS Refresher Sessions (for Simulator Operators and Drill Coordinators):

Registration is required for all sessions and will be available in the MISO Learning Center this summer.

MISO's commitment to operator training includes offering a number of training classes throughout the year for MISO-Member operators. MISO collaborates with members of the OTUG to identify and schedule the training.

The mission of the OTUG is to identify and advise MISO and its stakeholders on reliability risks and mitigation of risks through development of training activities to ensure reliable operations of the Bulk Electric System (BES).

2026 Training Classes:

The following courses are  available for registration in the MISO Learning Center beginning 6 weeks prior to the training date. They are available to MISO members free of charge.
