The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) that coordinates electric grid operations, operates wholesale electricity markets, and works with stakeholders to plan transmission infrastructure across the central United States. MISO helps maintain reliability throughout a region spanning 15 states and the Canadian province of Manitoba while supporting the evolving needs of the electric system.
Grid Reliability: MISO coordinates regional grid operations to help maintain the reliable flow of electricity across its footprint.
Energy Markets: MISO operates wholesale electricity markets that facilitate the efficient buying and selling of electricity.
Transmission Planning: MISO works with stakeholders to identify and plan regional transmission needs that support reliability and future growth.
Stakeholder Engagement: MISO uses an open stakeholder process that brings together regulators, utilities, market participants, and other industry partners.
MISO does not generate electricity or sell electricity directly to homes and businesses. Instead, MISO coordinates the regional transmission system, operates wholesale electricity markets, and works with stakeholders to maintain reliability and plan for future system needs.

MISO is committed to understanding how environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles impact business, member strategies and the RTO’s reputation. ESG scores help stakeholders, creditors and investors assess non-financial business factors. While ESG scoring is new to MISO, the concepts of environmental stewardship, social responsibility and strong governance are not.
